Well, I'm not sure why, but I ended up being given a few presents today. I think my family must be ill or something.

Among the highlights were; a brand new super camera of awesome (must test it out at a DW exhibition as soon as I get a chance), the complete Wurzel Gummige, a collection of First Doctor missing stories on audio book, Stuff of Nightmares (the new Fourth Doctor radio plays, not literally stuff of nightmares), a nintendo DS, a new (and better, in my opinion) Fourth Doctor action figure and some books on Celtic and Persian mythology.

Many thanks to proskynesis for FROBISHER! I took the opportunity to take some 'funny' photos for the occasion.

Six and Frobisher arrive in the south pole to check out some Pengish colonies.

But the Fourth Doctor was being mean and so he shoved him in the ground.

Then tried to pull him out.

But he fell over

It was all okay in the end.

I'll add more to this later. :)

My father, once again, displays his blatant and quite terrifying racism. It's like a daily event. But today was especially frustrating. At the dinner table (eating curry! OM NOM NOM NOM!) someone mentioned a friend of Matt's who got married about a year or so ago. It went a little something like this;

Josh: Les got married didn't he?
Me: Yeah, about a year ago I think...
Dad: She'll have got permanent leave of stay now. :\
Me: What?
Dad: She'll have been given permission to stay in the UK now that she's married.
Me: So? What are you trying to suggest?
Dad: Oh, nothing...

Okay, first of all, my father has never even met the woman in question (he doesn't even know her name). All he knows is that she was born abroad. He's barely met Les. Every time the subject comes up he says this. Just because someone isn't British that clearly means they can't get married without some ulterior motive for getting citizenship 'by the back door'. Even if it were true (and I don't think it is) he still has no reason to say this other than his own bigotry.
Grrr.
And I wonder why I'm so fucked up as a human being. :(

It snowed today!! :D

This called for camera foolishness. However, my fail filled camera didn't seem to like the cold and only allowed me a few shots before it died. The best of which was this one of the first Doctor arriving on Oodsphere. :)

I also managed to snap the Kitling looking confused at the presence of SNOWS!

We FINALLY put up the Christmas tree as well. Nothing major, but hopefully something that will help me get noticed by an agent. Job hunting is going badly. No one wants to hire an incompetent, so I'm a bit stuck.
What else...?

Oh yeah...

DOCTOR WHO IN LESS THAN A WEEK!!! :DDD
YEAH!!

Best word ever?

Malcontent. But only when said in Wormtong's voice. ;P

2. Best Doctor Who scene ever?

Hmmm.... Either "IF WE DON'T DO SOMETHING QUICK, THE WHOLE UNIVERSE WILL BE DESTROYED" or possibly the scene in City of Death with "Well, I'm a thief. This is Romana, she's my accomplice, and that's Duggan, and he's the detective who's been kind enough to catch me; that's his job. You see our two lines of work dovetail quite beautifully."

3. Best dragon ever?

Smaug. He was some great dialogue in The Hobbit. Glaurung has some as well, but I like the contrast between the mighty Dragon and the silly Hobbit. :)

4. Best jellybaby flavour ever?

Lemon. Come on, that's an awesome name!

Now, in other news...

I've started reading Mythago Wood. Not what I expected, but so far, it's quite interesting. Will update more when I've read more than two chapters. XD

In other, other news...

Will be heading to Bursgough on Monday to apply for a night time job at the Tesco that's there. Sounds easy and such, but will require me getting a taxi home if I get it. Its a shift that ends at 2 in the morning. Which seems to be the time I usually go to bed at the moment. Body clock is seriously fucked.

In other, other, other news...

I got Mission to Magnus BF audio as a late, late, late, LATE birthday present from proskynesis .
What's been happening recently?

Well, my former boss has given me about 300 books and a dozen ornaments she couldn't get rid of and has asked me to sell them on eBay and amazon. So, on Thursday morning, I went down to the old shop to pick up all the boxes and bring them home along with a new book case (which she'd kindly donated to my cause). Having spent the best part of Friday and most of today listing all these things I decided to give my bedroom a bit of a reshuffle. Hey, what else is an unemployable git like me supposed to do? Well, without further ado, here's what I've done;

Now, as you may have spotted, I got the Half Blood Prince on DVD! Here it is...

I gave it a watch today and then started on the special features. The deletes scenes aren't great, but there are a few I think they should have kept in to avoid confusions. Like why Dumbledore took Harry to the cave; in the film it just seems random, unlike the book. But I was glad they filmed the explanation, if nothing else. Also, there's a scene where Harry and Hermione accuse Draco of being 'ill'. That made me laugh for some reason.

Moving on...

Thanks to this awesomeness...

<lj-embed id="103" />

I decided to make some Master icons...

That was fun.
Oh, I also watched Born of Hope. It was quite good, though I often got confused because Arathorn looks a bit too much like Movie!Aragorn. But I think that was deliberate. It was better than Hunt for Gollum anyway.

Now, lastly, here are some pictures for Adonia I made. They might not make a lot of sense right now, but they will... Eventually. ;D

I hope that first one creeps you out. ;P

Merlin was really good today. PROPHECY! MAGIC! MORDRED! MORGANA! EVIL! I loved how Morgana stood up to Uther. And Mordred was epic, as usual. MERLIN Vs MORDRED FOREBODING! THE DRAGON!! I can't wait for him to get free. It will be mega dooom! But it looks like we'll be seeing more emo!Merlin.

Now I'm going to go to sleep...

Just spotted this..

0_0

Anyway...

Went into Southport today for job huntings. Applied at three bookshops, one newsagents and one large Spar type thing. Like a news agents, only they sell toilet paper as well. Or something... I don't know. The first book shop was a disaster because the guy had NO IDEA WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. It went something like this...

Me: Hi! I saw a job advertised for here.
Guy: What?
Me: Um, at the job centre there was an advert for a job here.
Giy: I, um, what?
Me: Are you offering a job here?
Goy: Sorry, I don't know.
Me: Can I see the manager or something?
Gim: I am the manager.
Me: ... Ah... Well, here's my CV
Guy: What for?
Me: For the job you advertised.
Guy: Oh right.... yeah...

*gnaws own hands off* I thought I'd got the wrong shop, but I checked a few times and it was definitely the right one. The second one was fine and they said they'd call me if they want an interview. The third was annoying because they told me it had already been filled. -_-
The newsagent manager said that his brother had been given the job and they'd forgotten to take the ad down at the job centre. Grr. The Spar type store were okay and friendly and said I was the first to give in a CV. So... maybe... I don't know. :\
AH! But then there was something good, actually, that happened!! There was a little down the side bookshop in Southport I went to with the intent of applying for a job (forgetting I'd run out of CVs at this point). This conversation happened;

Guy: How old are you?
Me: 22.
Guy: Blimy! You look 14!
Me: Well, I am one of the Dúnedain.
Guy: Ah! A son of Numenor?
Me: OMG!! :DD

So that was neat. Had a bit of a chat with him about middle earth before realising I hadn't any CVs left. He said they didn't have any jobs going anyway but if I left my phone number he'd let me know.
The old bookshop is just about done. However, there's still some stock left and the boss wants me to sell some of it on Amazon / eBay for her. I'll take a cut, naturally. She's also given me a new book case which I'm going to get tomorrow. Also a new office chair. My current one is annoying and stiff and I don't like it. :( (which is why I'm always keen to steal Joshua's comfy chair of comfort, the only time I get an excuse is when I have a friend over and I only once managed to keep hold of the chair for a day afterwards. CURSES!) Why am I obsessing over a chair? D:

Hmmm. Better begin Chirstmas shopping. I've usually done it all by now. :\

Speaking of Christmas... Anyone want a Christmas card from me? Leave a comment saying so and then e-mail me your address to joel.cornah@gmail.com
Please note: <strike>all</strike> most of them will probably NOT be 'Chiristmas' cards... BUT THEY WILL BE CARDS!! MARK MY WORDS!!

(I'll also answer more, if asked)

Formy's questions, answered by me:

1. What is it like to grow up speaking English with an accent?

Terrible. No one trusts you or lets you steal their things. Given that I have a Lancashire accent, it means all people from Yorkshire automatically try and stab me in the face with blunt knives and then sell my organs on eBay. It's happened at least five times already.

2. Can you remember your life before Dr. Who?

Yes. Dark times. Dark times. I only got into Doctor Who in the early twenty hundreds when it was being repeated on UKGold. My first Doctor was Sylvester McCoy. :) Before that I was a bastard who no one liked. Huh, not much change there....

3. Can you imagine the rest of your life without Dr. Who?

I can try... Egad! I'd have to do something constructive in my spare time! THE HORROR!!

4. Elves vs. Ents: which are better and why?

Ents! They have far better skin and less hate. Also, they don't randomly sail away when they might be needed.

5. Someone offers to sell you Tolkien's pipe--how much would you pay for it?

I'd pay £4.57 ;D

PETER DAVISON IN STAR TREK?

Had an odd dream last night in which there was an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation where Peter Davison was playing some delegate from some planet wanting to join the Federation. Piccard wanted to keep Data away from him because he was afraid that Peter would mistake him for Kamelion. Thus ensued a series of amusing scenes in which Data and Peter kept missing each other and Piccard was getting more and more frustrated because Data wouldn't stay in the cupboard where he put him.
It all culminated in Q appearing and telling Peter that he had to go back to his home planet because the Federation employs androids. Peter didn't understand and then, on the way to the transporter, he bumped into Data and they had a fight. It involved swords for some reason and they went onto the holo-deck and fought in, you guessed it, the TARDIS. Piccard managed to stop them and Peter went with him to Ten Forward and they had some Romulan ale together.
Then the dream changed into something different involving me rushing around Manchester for some unknown reason.

Well, that was weird.

Grr. I need a job. Going to the Job Centre tomorrow, so maybe I'll get a little closer to that goal. Ho hum. I want something part time for now. I think a full time job would be such a shock to the system that I'd be more terrible than usual. If it's part time I may slip under the radar for a while... Plus I'd have money. DAMN YOU CAPITALISM!

In other news...

I'm currently in the process of going through tDP and noting down all the names and places mentioned. I accompany them with a brief description and sometimes a history. It's good for minor characters anyway and I can use it as a reference later. I'm almost half way through and the list is already 15 pages long. Didn't realise I had so many characters and places mentioned. 0_0
I also realised that the word 'Adonia' isn't actually in the book until somewhere around Chapter Ten... Oops. XD

In some what related news...

Been looking into more literary consultancy groups. The Writer's Workshop (mentioned in an earlier post) appears to be a well known one and the most successful one. There are others, some more, some less expensive. I think I'll spend a day contacting them and getting some more info on them and seeing if any of them think tDP has potential. There's a neat list of a few in the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook.

In other, other news...

I find myself, more and more, wandering down memory lane. Well, in terms of TV. I've developed a liking for thinking of old shows I used to watch, looking them up on wikipedia and then realising that holy crap there's so much I haven't seen of them. Some recent highlights have been; Fairly Oddparents, Invader Zim, Thomas the Tank Engine and the Thunderbirds. I gave some of the TV movies of Fairly Oddparents a watch today. Good stuff.

Heroes was amusing today. Something about Sylar eating lunch and pretending to be civil amuses me. Plus it looked like he was regenerating at one point. My face is a bit too srsbsns I think, but most of the other pictures were either FLASHED TO DEATH or at the wrong angle.

Anyone want a Gallfrey picture? I'm a bit bored, so if you want me to photoshop you wearing Gallifreyan robes I'll do it. Just send me a picture of yourself (preferably looking directly to the camera) and tell me what colour robes you'd like. :)
(I almost made mine Lord President, but didn't... XD )

<lj:music>Mules Are So Half Ass - Hank Green</lj:music>

There's this organisation called 'Writers Workshop' that I found out about today. I decided to look it up on the internets. It seems okay and they claim to have "stunning contacts with agents, publishers, ghostwriters and others". They say that they can help edit a MMS and then, if they think it's good enough, give a personal recommendation to an agency. All well and good and promising.
The snag is the charge. £160 flat charge plus £3.50 per thousand words. The Dinosaur Prince is 125,000 words long. That brings the total up to £597.50... 0_____0

I'm going to start saving up. Hopefully if I get a job soon this won't take so long. What's more is they have special writers weekends (one in Oxford on Saturday 22nd May 2010... Tempting) where you get to meet agents and other writers. They also sponsor a Writers festival in York which is also tempting. 9-11 April, 2010... May be a bit too soon; probably won't be able to afford it, but it DOES sound like it would be helpful given that it offers "2 One-to-One slots with agents / editors" and a variety of workshops. The main problem being that TDP is so fucking LOOOONNNNGG. 444 pages, man. It wasn't until I rang up the Writers Workshop people today that I realised it was quite long for a book. Apparently a good 80% are 90,000 or less. o_O I'm scared.

Anyone got any ideas on weather this sounds like a good idea? The website is HERE if you want to check them out. That price is what's thrown me most, though. I hope they're legit. :\

In other news...

<lj-embed id="101" />

Clare Short would make a 'good' Doctor.... *cough*

Gosh, The Stone of Norán is looking pretty long. 50 Chapters I make it so far. Once again, you may like the chapter titles. I do so enjoy writing them. It has a four part Epilogue anyway. In the third book I think that Chapter 49 is the most monumental. It unveils the great villain of the story and BAD THINGS start to happen. Very quickly.
You can still read book one, The Dinosaur Prince, at joelcornah. PLUG!! :p

In other news...

I got the Key to Time the other day and there's a documentary on The Pirate Planet about Douglas Adams. Apparently he and his friends at University used to make Doctor Who radio plays together. One was about Daleks being powered by Rice Krispies. Because Davros worked for Kellogs.

Right now I feel like going back to writing. :)

Thanks to eBay and the fact that there are people out there willing to pay out of the nose (or, more accurately, wallet) for my crap, I got some £200 today. :D
I may have mentioned this before, but I had these Lord of the Rings collectors models that came with magazines. My grandmother used to pick them up for me as her newsagents got them and ours didn't. At about 50 I asked her to stop as I had no more room and the figures were just getting ridiculous. Then one day she came over with #50-100 and told me I could have them. For the last three years or so they've been taking up cupboard space. Since I hit my financial crisis I decided to see what they could get on eBay. I sold them in packs of ten and each went for about £30. I'm still keeping some of them, mind; the ones I like. :)
It was kind of annoying to post them all, though. I started off with about 4 large packages, each with 10 figures / magazines in. These were too heavy and would have to go Parcelforce, which would cost about £50 each! HELL NO! So the Post Office person told me to separate them into smaller packages. Thus bringing it to 7 packages, each at £5-£10 to post. Some of them went to Istanbul, while others to Spain. There are still three more yet to be paid for. If we add those my grand total is about £231 minus about £50 shipping, so £181 all together.
That money will go towards Christmas costs. I've already got a few gifts bought and will be making plans for more once the Job Centre start paying me. Though I still hope I get the job at the local shop; apparently the person responsible for looking at the applications has been away on holiday and gets back this week. So I may hear about that soon... :\

In other news...

I'm going to start reading The Mabinogion. First because I love saying the title. hehe! Mabinogion! It's a cool word. Second because I have a strange love for Welsh mythology and third because I've only read bits of it in the far flung past and feel it's time I gave it a proper read....

In other, other news...

Still no Key to Time... Amazon has betrayed me! D: Or maybe I put it on free shipping... Probably. XD

Oh, and Heroes... What is this shit? It seems that we are FINALLY getting some direction to this series. My money is still on Samuel being the cause of that world splitting in two thing that they went on about in season 3.
House has been good this season, though. Best line so far; Wilson: "I need.... PANTS!"

That's all I can think of right now.

Again, it would have been a great normal episode, perhaps. But as for 'the scariest Doctor Who yet'? No.
It was pretty good, though. The Mars surface shots looked really good. Fucking silly robot, though. Obvious future product thing is obvious. Ice Warrior references! Yay! I knew there would be. No Sutekh, though. Sad tiems. It was nice all the same. I thought they'd have more plans to stop the water, though. The more convoluted, the better. XD
Still, the best of this episode was the last ten minutes. The further I get with it, the less enthusiastic I feel about it. :\ Hmm. I'm going to get to the end of it and perhaps re-edit it a third time and see how it looks. After that I'm going to do a major rewrite of another short story called 'Ell'. I'll make it make more sense this time. Short stories are easier to get published than novels. All the same, I'm going to start work on the plan for Book Three: The Stone of Norán soon.
This was a weekend of much Doctor Who geekery. :D

On Friday proskynesis and I went to forbidden Planet in Manchester and were highly amused by all of the nerdy merchandise. Star Trek seems to produce the strangest stuff. O_o There was a Teddy Bear that was supposed to be Uhura, Tribbles and cheesy 60s Kirk figures and play sets. SPIN ACTION TRANSPORTERS! We restrained ourselves from emptying our bank accounts into it.
We went to the magical kingdom of Parbold and there we watch the animated Hobbit movie. SO MUCH CRAP! IT'S WONDERFUL! Gandalf is terrifying. We watched it on DVD and noticed (something not noticeable on the YouTube clips) how disturbing the mouth animations are. NIGHTMARE TIME! Also there's a short bit, about two seconds long, on the Lonely Mountain where two dwarves run towards it in a REALLY BADLY DONE EARLY 80s COMPUTER GAME STYLE RUN. I'll have to make an animated gif for it. Somehow... Then after the obligatory Doctor Who watchings we readied our minds through psychic augmentation for the day to come.

Saturday was a full day of Doctery goodness. But let us not forget that this was, after all, some serious business. So serious, in fact, that it needed to be overseen by...

(We later went and found the trailer to this film. It appears to involve a Rabbi in a cupboard. WIN)

The FAB Cafe in Manchester is an odd place, as I have reported before. But it gets all the odder when strange people are invited there. Few are stranger than Richard Franklin. He played Mike Yates, a member of UNIT, during the 70s with John Pertwee. Yates, you may remember, betrayed the Doctor and co in Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Richard tried to defend his character by saying how much he sympathised and thought he was doing the right thing. We happened to know that he has a reputation for, not only being a massive pervert, but founding a right wing political party. From what I heard it seems his policies revolve around children running into the road and not respecting authority. He didn't like Matt Smith.

. ///==
~ {^_^} ~

That's my attempt at a Matt Smith Smily... FAIL.
Anyway, here's Richard doing his panel thing...

Also on the panel was Anneke Wills, who played Polly, assistant to the first and second Doctors. She had interesting tales of her time in drama school and of meeting William Hartnell. Heart' was apparently quite cruel to his driver and made him wait outside instead of letting him have a drink in the pubs they went to. Poor bloke. D: I asked about the regeneration sequence because I've heard conflicting rumours about it involving a damaged camera, but Anneke knew nothing of this. Sad times.

Next up was Romana aka Mary Tamm.
She was Tom Baker's companion in THE KEY TO TIME SERIES!! :o
A lot of her time was taken talking about her growing up with a STRONG YORKSHIRE ACCENT and being abused for it at drama school. Oh dear. How did Christopher Eccelston survive? BY KICKING EVERYONE'S FUCKING ARSES, THAT'S HOW! Anyway, some guy fell asleep during her panel and he was BANISHED TO THE WASTELANDS... Or, rather, laughed at a bit. :p

Then there was a bit of a break where we got some signatures. Richard Franklin came up to me and tried to convert me to his right wing ideology. It was scary. He started off talking about Roger Delgardo (I'd asked him a question about him in the panel), then he mentioned Antony Ainly and his "strange liberal ideas" then went on and on and on about how terrible the labour party is and how David Cameron is too left wing and how he's standing somewhere at the next election and... Urrh! I tried to get out of there on the quick-fast.
(Incidentally, I've just remembered, Anneke Wills had been on a random psychic show and was pimping it. During the signings one guy went up to her and prattled to her about how he loves all that *cough* spiritualist stuff. He started recommending books to her and telling her how to get in touch with her inner spirits. She was all noddy and "yes... okay..." to him. I hope she WAS humouring him...
Anyway, here's some pictures of me and Gemma with a dalek...

FUN TIMES!

Because of my attire I was accused of being Matt Smith by the main presenter guy. It was amusing.

Moving on!

The next panel was Colin Spaull (random guy in Revelation of the Daleks / guy from Age of Steel) and Terry Maloy (DAVROS!!). Terry got most of the attention. It interested me that no one asked what he thought of the new Davros... Perhaps they thought he would be tired of it. XD
I don't remember much about it, but I recall Terry being really amusing. :)

Another break and a chance for some more signatures! This time not only with Davros and Colin Spaull, but also with Terrance Dicks! He was one of the script editors in the 70s and has an excellent voice. I got him to sign my novelization of The Three Doctors and then got a photo...

Then I spoke to Dave Ross, and got a photo with him too! :D

It's weird. I never thought of myself as being taller than Davros. :s

Then there was a panel with Terrance Dicks and Andrew Cartmel (the latter also being a script editor, but he was for the McCoy times). The Interviewer was basically REJECTED and Terrance and Andrew just started interviewing one another. IT WAS GREAT! Terrance revealed his immense hatred for John Nathan Turner (the producer who ran the show when it was axed), saying "Well, the words Nazi and Hitler come to mind when I think of JNT..." CRUELTY! Andrew sounded so hopeful and optimistic about McCoy's era. He said how he felt it was finally getting 'right' by the last season and that one more would have been just what it needed to spring board to the top again. But, of course, it never happened and he was sad. :(

After this there was a delay because Sylvester McCoy's train was late. He arrived in a flurry of WTF! He seems to have broken his foot and so was on crutches. O NOES! ;_; But still, he had his hat!! His panel was AMAZING! He's just made of insanity! He seems to have spent an awful lot of time on stage in just his underpants and a little more time taking said underpants off. He's a bit like Tom Baker in that he says such strange and bizarre things with such conviction that you almost believe that he believes them.
I, being coerced by Gemma, asked him about THE AIRZONE film he made. Apparently he was basically conned into it. Hahaha! Oh well. It was amusing. Though I think Colin has more to answer for about that particular film...
Then there were the obligatory signings and pictures!! :D

Andrew Cartmell seemed really happy that someone wanted a picture taken with him. XD Poor guy.

There was then the EPIC SHOWDOWN between Sylvester and Terry! They had a little quiz that was really, really odd. It's hard to say what was more awkward about it. Neither of them seemed to be prepared or know many of the answers. But Sylve won in the end. YAY!! ^_^

We decided not to stay for the after show party because there was MERLIN to be watched! So we did that. Because we are COOL!

On Sunday we mournfully travelled down to Blackpool for the final day of the Doctor Who Museum. Sad times once again. BUT!! There was good! I SAW STEVEN MOFFAT!!! SERIOUSLY!! We were walking towards the museum and he was walking towards us! I stared at him and said "Is that Steven Moffat?" and he gave me a quick glance. I recognised his voice as well. I like to think that, had I been wearing my Matt Smith outfit, he might have said hello. :( Alas, t'was not to be...
Anyway. I won't repeat pictures too similar to last time, so here are my favourites.

THIS IS THE FIRST THING ANYONE WOULD DO!! (That's Matt, my older brother)

Drunken Colin Baker look-a-like was also wandering around. WITH A CYBERMAT! There was some fun with this...

YES! WE ARE VERY MATURE!!

I tried to drive Bessie away from the DEMON CHILD!! FEAR!!

So did Gemma!

NOTE: Some of these might be photo shopped... A bit...

MUHAHAHA! Gemma in her sixth regeneration, piloting her TARDIS. :D

Me in my, um, somethingth regeneration, piloting my TARDIS. :D

Gemma was tempted to steal Colin Baker's FACE!

Two Time Lords trying to fly a TARDIS. Difficult when one wants to go to Ceti Alpha 4 and the other to Metabilis 3.

Me: You've changed the coordinates!
Gemma: HAHAH! YES! >:D
Me: But we'll head into a temporal causality paradox!
Gemma: No we won't.
Me: Oh... Really?
Gemma: Maybe...

Yeah... Why we weren't thrown out is a mystery. XD I admire Gemma for her daring.

The last thing we did was try and record a video...

http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i291/JoelCornah/?action=view&current=S7301459.flv

My camera broke down after we left. It's now completely dead. :( I'm getting a new one for Christmas, but if this one had held out just a little longer... There were Ice Warrior pictures and Zygons and stuff that were needed. More sad times.

Well, all this leaves us in anticipation of The Waters of Mars next week. It had better be DAMNED good. Making us wait so long. >:(

Oh, and one more thing...

CYBERMATT SMITH!! He's been shot, covered in petrol, kidnapped, tortured and shot again but he always comes out of it more awesome than ever. It was nice to see token history geek character Ruth make a reappearance. Spooks doesn't have reappearances very often, but its nice when it happens. :)

In other, other news...

I wish it would stop fucking raining. :\ It's not even cool epic rain.
